Lessons Learned Hunting Turkeys

This week on Americana Outdoors, we’re getting some insight into the challenges and triumphs that go hand in hand with turkey hunting! Throughout this episode we’ll hear some key words of wisdom for how to best increase your odds of bringing home one of these birds! As we know all too well, turkeys can be some of the most challenging and frustrating kind of hunting out in the fields. With their incredibly sharp eyesight, and fine tuned hearing, these birds have busted even the best hunters on countless occasions. Wade Middleton, Clark Wendlandt, and Michael Wersig give us a rundown on their tips and tricks they rely on to outsmart these birds. One of these handy tips includes the best way to approach making turkey calls and having conversations with them, to knowing when to back off and make fewer calls. Insight into what they like to bring out to the field with them, from turkey vests, head-to-toe camouflage, to calls, and what you want to hunt them with, are just a few of the things we’ll cover.

As we kick off our turkey hunting adventures, we’ll join Clark Wendlandt in the field with his trusty T/C Encore® Pro Hunter™ Turkey model shotgun. For this hunt, Clark is taking an aggressive approach and covering as much ground as possible with the hopes of calling in a mature bird. As we follow Clark along the many winding paths, we see a lot of turkeys, and hear a lot of turkeys, but never quite get the chance to take one. True to turkey form, the turkey out-wit our team and live to gobble another day.  Never one to give up, Clark and Michael return to the field the next day, this time in a location that looks promising.  On this second day of turkey hunting, we’ll witness a great display of teamwork between Clark and Michael, as Michael has to convince Clark to listen to him and make a risky position change to get a good shot on one of these birds.

Moving along, it’s Michaels turn to get a turkey and for Clark to step behind the camera. Michael follows the same approach Clark used, and aggressively moves on these turkeys. Call after call, Michael sounds off at these turkeys and the turkeys gobble back at him. However, these turkeys don’t make Michaels mission easy, and he busts a few along his way. As he comes upon the last location he was going to try, finally, a turkey emerges from the brush and presents a perfect shot opportunity.

To wrap up our turkey time, Wade joins Clark out in the field, with the all new Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s CLUB Crystal Friction Turkey Calls! We’ll start off with hearing Wades thoughts on how to best prepare your new turkey caller, and how to get the full use of it out in the field! As we enter into our last hunting outing, once again we have some great encounters with lots of turkey, and Wade learns there’s a first time for everything when he takes his shot on a turkey! Some of the key take aways from today are that a turkey’s eyesight is its greatest defense, with its hearing coming in at a close second.  When you hit the field for your next turkey hunt, keep in mind that while mistakes can and will happen, if you keep at it and outsmart the bird, you’ll walk away with some great encounters, and hopefully a beautiful turkey for the table!
