Sam Rayburn Reservoir

On this episode of the Bass Pro Shops Fisherman’s Handbook, host Wade Middleton heads over to one of his favorite fishing destinations, Sam Rayburn Reservoir.  Sam Rayburn is widely considered among the best bass fishing lakes in the country.  On this specific trip Wade takes to the water on back-to-back days.  From one day to the next, the weather changes drastically.  Wade has to figure out how to re-pattern the fish, and determine exactly how to catch them.

One of the most prominent lures used on Sam Rayburn this time of year to catch bass is a lipless crankbait.  The bass tend to hide out in the submerged grass scattered across the lake.  A lipless crankbait worked along the top of this grass can cause a great reaction bite from feeding fish.  On the first day of this trip, conditions set up perfect for Wade to target the fish in this manner.  He decides to go with a SPRO Aruku Shad in a crawfish pattern.  The fish quickly begin biting, and continue to do so for the remainder of the day.

The following day Wade returns back out onto Sam Rayburn Reservoir.  Conditions have changed drastically from what Wade faced on the prior day.  A cold front has blown through leaving blue bird skies, and a high pressure day.  In these types of conditions, fishing can become very tough.  Knowing that the fish had been hiding out in the grass, Wade decides to fish around the emergent cover again.  This go around he ties on a SPRO McStick and finds a great deal of success.
